Home / How it Works
Identify traits. Build tools to innovate.
The first step to building tools to breed, protect, or improve efficacy is to identify your strain by genotyping its DNA. After submitting a sample, we'll use Next Generation Sequencing to create a Strain ID report.
WHAT DO WE NEED?
One square inch of healthy leaf, preferably newly emerged.
One square inch is
size of a US Quarter.
Marigene will come to you, or you can work with one of our partner labs located throughout the county.

Marigene uses Next-Generation Sequencing techniques to produce "genetic fingerprints" (genotypes) of your strains.
Using results from the Strain Identification paired with genetic markers, we can tell what makes your plant unique.

Breeding Project Design and Consultation
While traditional breeding relies on phenotype alone, Marker-Assisted Breeding utilizes genetic information to identify the genes that confer the specific phenotype, allowing for a vast acceleration in the development of desirable cultivars. The benefit are cost efficiency, high accuracy in strain selection, and an accelerated timeframe to achieve strain stabilization.
